Lameness Investigations

We assess many lame horses each year. Most evaluations can take place at your yard. If further diagnostics are needed, we’ll arrange for them to take place promptly to help with accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Diagnosis

The process begins with a thorough clinical examination. Valuable insights can be gained by observing the horse both at rest and in motion. Our experienced vets are skilled at detecting subtle changes in anatomy, gait, and posture, and will only recommend further diagnostics when truly necessary. Assessments on different surfaces, lunging, and flexion tests are all part of our standard approach.

In some cases, nerve blocks may be used to pinpoint the source of pain. This involves temporarily numbing a specific area with local anaesthetic – if lameness improves, the affected region is investigated further.

Once the source of lameness is confirmed, further imaging may be carried out using radiography or ultrasonography. Our mobile equipment, including a digital X-ray system, produces high-quality images quickly and safely, even in emergency situations where mains power isn’t available. We also use high-frequency ultrasound machines to assess soft tissue injuries in detail, such as damage to tendons or ligaments.

Treatment and Collaboration

We will work with you to provide your horse with the most suitable treatment and rehabilitation plan.

For cases requiring specialist surgery, we’ll refer you to an appropriate referral centre.

We also recognise the importance of a holistic approach to equine care. Our vets work closely with farriers, dentists, saddle fitters and physiotherapists to ensure your horse’s comfort and optimise performance.
