Arthritis is, unfortunately, very common in horses, particularly in older individuals. It is a degenerative joint condition that leads to pain and inflammation. Over time, this inflammation causes irreversible damage to the cartilage within the joint, resulting in ongoing discomfort. Cartilage acts as the cushioning that allows joints to move smoothly. As arthritis cannot be cured, it requires lifelong management to keep affected horses as comfortable as possible.
